Plagued By Under-Eye Bags? A Blepharoplasty Can Help

As we age, some sagging can appear under the eyes, mostly due to the natural loss of collagen and elasticity.

While creams provide some help, they can't fully resolve severe under-eye bags.

If you’re looking for a permanent solution to under-eye bags and want a more youthful appearance, Dr. Anthony N. Dardano proudly offers blepharoplasty at his office in Boca Raton, Florida.

Dr. Dardano is an experienced plastic surgeon offering a range of cosmetic and surgical procedures to help each patient feel their best.

Causes of under-eye bags

Have you noticed the skin under the eyes starting to sag? If so, you’re not alone. Many people begin to notice this change as they age, mostly due to decreased collagen production.

Collagen and elastin keep the skin tight and firm, but the body produces less of them as you age. The result is saggy or loose skin, especially in the face and under the eyes.

Although aging is the main culprit, other factors can contribute to eye bags. Genetics, fluid retention, and smoking all contribute to the condition.

What is a blepharoplasty?

A blepharoplasty is a procedure we use to remove excess fat or skin from the eyelids. An upper blepharoplasty addresses the upper lids, while a lower blepharoplasty addresses under-eye bags.

Both procedures are available at Dr. Dardano's practice, with lower blepharoplasty aimed specifically at under-eye bags. This procedure requires anesthesia and addresses excess fat around the lower lid.

During the procedure, Dr. Dardano either removes or repositions the fat under the eyelids to improve the appearance of bags. He also tightens the skin to eliminate wrinkles that form under the eyes.

People may consider blepharoplasty if they have excess skin above or below the eyelids that causes a cosmetic concern. You may also want the procedure if excess skin or fat is affecting your peripheral vision.

Benefits of blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty surgery does require some downtime, but it has many benefits. It’s a permanent procedure that addresses the root cause of under-eye bags, eliminating them for good.

It also provides patients with a refreshed and less tired appearance. The procedure is a great option when other treatments haven’t worked, or you have significant under-eye bags.

Recovering after blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day. It’s common to have swelling, bruising, and discomfort for the first week or two.

Sleep with your head raised above the chest to help with swelling for the first few nights. Use prescription eye drops as needed, and apply ice packs to the eyelids for 10 minutes every hour.

When you go outside, wear sunglasses to protect your skin from UV rays and wind. Don’t do anything strenuous for a week to let the area heal.

It’s essential to follow our aftercare instructions when you get home to allow the incisions to heal. However, most people can return to normal activities within two weeks.

Take the first step toward a refreshed, youthful look. Contact our Boca Raton office today to schedule your personalized blepharoplasty consultation with Dr. Dardano, or send us a message through our website to get started on your transformation.
